Tipton County’s only provider of the DEXA bone density scan

Beginning spring 2025, Baptist Tipton will be the only provider in Tipton County to offer the DEXA bone density scan, a high-precision imaging tool that detects bone loss with more accuracy and detail, which can lead to more effective treatment options. The DEXA scan does require a doctor’s referral.

A DEXA bone density scan is fast, noninvasive and uses an extremely low level of radiation. It is the best technique for assessing bone mineral density in postmenopausal women according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as for patients with osteoporosis risk factors, such as low body mass index, a family history of osteoporosis and tobacco and alcohol use.

Your doctor may order a DEXA scan if you:

  • Are a woman 65 years or older, or a man 70 years or older (as recommended by the National Osteoporosis Foundation)
  • Have symptoms of osteoporosis
  • Break a bone after age 50
  • Are a man 50 to 59 years old and have risk factors
  • Are postmenopausal, are under 65 years old and have risk factors, such as:
    • Tobacco and/or alcohol use
    • Use of steroids
    • Low body mass index (BMI)
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Physical inactivity
    • Family history of osteoporosis
    • Previous fractures
    • Height loss of more than an inch
