Hospice & Palliative Care

Baptist Memorial Health Care has partnered with LHC® Group to provide home care and hospice services for our patients.

Hospice care is an additional level of home care, which offers patients and families the support of a specially trained team with expertise in pain and symptom management. This treatment is focused on comfort and quality because curative treatments may not be an option. Hospice care can be provided anywhere patients call home, including their home, nursing home and our Baptist Reynolds Hospice House.

Hospice care includes routine care, general inpatient care and respite care. Respite care is short-term care that can be provided based on the patient/family’s need. A nurse and the medical director recommend the appropriate level of care for patients. Short-term inpatient care may be necessary for better management of pain and symptoms.

Home Care: Baptist also provides in-home hospice services through West Tennessee and North Mississippi under the Baptist Home Care and Hospice and Baptist Home Care and Hospice name. Learn more about Home Care.

Palliative care provides patients who are diagnosed with a chronic or life-limiting condition with the following services, in an inpatient hospital setting:

  • Advance care planning
  • Do-not-resuscitate status clarification
  • Symptom management
  • Family support to guide decision-making
  • End-of-life care for patients not appropriate for hospice
  • Inpatient or home-hospice coordination
  • Spiritual support

Baptist Reynolds Hospice House 

This home-like environment provides patients with spacious rooms, a patient spa, home-cooked meals prepared on-site, large living room areas with fireplaces, children's play room, interfaith chapel, outdoor gardens and pet and music therapy.

We Honor Veterans

"We Honor Veterans" is a collaborative program between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Baptist is honored to participate. Because of experiences from military services, veterans may have needs that require specific interventions while in hospice care.

Through the program, Baptist Hospice is committed to honoring and providing quality care and special recognition to veterans at the end of life. Please let a hospice team member know if you or your loved one is a current or retired member of our military services.

What Are the Differences Between Palliative Care And Hospice Care?

Who Can Receive this Care?

Palliative: Anyone with a serious illness, regardless of life expectancy, can receive palliative care.
Hospice: Someone with an illness with a life expectancy measured in months, not years.

Can I Continue To Receive Treatments To Cure My Illness?

Palliative: You may receive palliative care and curative care at the same time.
Hospice: Treatments and medicines aimed at relieving symptoms are provided by hospice.

Does Medicare Pay?

Palliative: Some treatments and medications may be covered.
Hospice: Medicare pays all charges related to hospice.

Does Medicaid Pay?

Palliative: Some treatments and medications may be covered.
Hospice: In 47 states, Medicaid pays all charges related to hospice.

Does Private Insurance Pay?

Palliative: Some treatments and medications may be covered.
Hospice: Most insurance plans have a hospice benefit.

Is This A Package Of Benefits?

Palliative: No, the services are flexible and based on the patient’s needs.
Hospice: Medicare and Medicaid hospice benefits are a package of benefits.

How Long Can I Receive Care?

Palliative: This will depend on your care needs and your coverage.
Hospice: As long as you meet the hospice's criteria of an illness with a life expectancy of months, not years.

What Organizations Provide These Services?

Palliative: Hospitals, hospices, nursing facilities and health care clinics.
Hospice: Hospice organizations and hospice programs owned by hospitals and other health care organizations.

Where Are Services Provided?

Palliative: Home-assisted living facility; nursing facility hospital
Hospice: Usually, wherever the patient resides: in their home, assisted living facility, nursing facility or hospital. Some hospices have facilities where people can live, like a hospice residence, or receive care for short-term reasons, such as acute pain or symptom management.

Who Provides These Services?

Palliative: It varies. However, usually there is a team including doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains, similar to the hospice team.
Hospice: A team: doctor, nurse, social worker, chaplain, volunteer, home health aide, and others.

Do They Offer Expert End-Of-Life Care?

Palliative: This varies — be sure to ask.
Hospice: Yes, staff members are experts in end-of-life care.
