Baptist North Mississippi PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency

Purpose

The purpose of the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacist responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Baptist North Mississippi PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Structure

  • 12-month program
  • 4-week orientation learning experience is followed by:
    • 8-week adult medicine learning experience
    • 8-week institutional pharmacy practice learning experience
    • 4-week critical care learning experience
    • 8-week teaching and learning experience
    • 4-week ambulatory care learning experience
    • 4-week longitudinal practice management learning experience
    • (2) 4-week elective learning experiences

  • Attend the Mississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Meeting (July; Jackson, MS)

  • Attend the Midsouth Pharmacy Residents Conference (April; Memphis, TN)

Resident Staffing Responsibilities

Residents staff approximately every 3rd weekend and every 3rd major holiday. The weekends alternate between staffing clinical pharmacy services and the central pharmacy. When working weekends, residents are compensated a day the following week. The residency program complies with ASHP duty hour requirements.

Training Sites

Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Specialty services include general medicine, critical care/pulmonology, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, general surgery, neurology, urology, infectious disease and oncology. In addition to the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program, the department provides institutional clinical training for pharmacy students from the University of Mississippi.  Residents also participate in the curriculum at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, as well as at the University of Mississippi Student Health Center.

How to Apply

Students eligible for a Doctor of Pharmacy degree are required to submit all requested documents through the PhORCAS application system. These documents include a letter of intent, a curriculum vitae, Doctor of Pharmacy transcript and three letters of recommendation. The candidate must also be eligible for licensure in the state of Mississippi, have U.S. citizenship or a permanent VISA and be available for an on-site or telephone interview.
