Developing Leaders in Community Pharmacy Practice
The Community-Based PGY1 pharmacy residency at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS, is a 12-month program composed of longitudinal learning experiences focused in transitions of care, ambulatory care, patient centered dispensing, teaching/precepting activities, research, specialty pharmacy services and practice management. The goal of this program is to provide the resident with a variety of high-quality learning experiences and opportunities to enhance clinical and leadership skills of a pharmacist in a community-based hospital.

Training Site Information
Mississippi Baptist Medical Center (MBMC) is a 440-bed acute care, community-based hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. MBMC admits approximately 21,000 hospital patients and performs more than 220,000 outpatient procedures each year and is a member of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system, one of the largest not-for-profit health-care systems in the country. On the MBMC campus there are three outpatient department clinics, an outpatient pharmacy, as well as a care coordination team that collaborates with multiple Baptist Medical Group clinics throughout the area to provide centralized clinical services.
Baptist Pharmacy Residency Program Purpose
Our residency program is designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. Our program aims to produce graduates of the residency program that are prepared to develop, implement, and manage advanced community pharmacy patient services.
Resident responsibilities and rotations
Resident responsibilities include improving patient care, drug safety and economic impact relating to medication use in multiple hospital settings, actively participating in multidisciplinary patient care rounds, assessing and improving medication appropriateness through utilization of evidence based medicine, and managing physician-initiated pharmacy consults with nutrition support, pharmacokinetics, and patient monitoring and education.
Residents begin their PGY1 training year with hospital, department and residency orientation, including EPIC training, ACLS/BLS certification, consult training/education and competency completion. Throughout the year, residents will complete required rotations designed to provide the broadest range of exposure and experience. Learning experiences include:

Residents in our PGY1 pharmacy residency program come from different educational and geographical backgrounds, adding to the rich experience offered through our program.
Clinical and Longitudinal Preceptors
Residents are provided the opportunity to train alongside clinical pharmacy preceptors who have expansive educational backgrounds and experience to enrich their learning and hands-on experiences.
Application Requirements and How to Apply
Students eligible for a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited school are required to submit all requested documents through the PhORCAS application system. Required documents include a letter of intent, a curriculum vitae, Doctor of Pharmacy transcript and 3 PhORCAS professional letters of recommendation. The candidate must also be eligible for licensure in the state of Mississippi, licensure and licensed within 90 days after start of program, and have U.S. citizenship or a permanent VISA.
